New York City's 'Fearless Girl' Statue Is Dividing Opinion And It's Time You Understand Why

An editor of an online photography website has highlighted exactly why we shouldn't support the 'Fearless Girl' statue, which is being misinterpreted as a symbol of feminism. Last month, a bronze sculpture known as 'Fearless Girl' was erected in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City, looking at the well-known 'Charging Bull' statue. And it was widely hailed as a turning point in New York City culture - a moment where we begin to recognise and glorify the strength and resilience of women publicly. The fact that it was erected in the city's male-dominant financial district was all the more impressive. Plus the vision of the young pony-taled girl staring down a raging bull - an emblem of masculine virility - is even more symbolic. Designed by Kristen Visbal, the statue looked to everyone to be an epic feminist statement at just a moment when we all really needed one. However, as with a lot of things, all might not be what it seems. Let's br...

There was a huge protest on Thursday at the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Lagos as thousands of UTME candidate accused the tertiary admission examination body of refusing to open its portal for them to effect changes in their personal data. The protesting candidates accused JAMB of collecting money from them for the exercise bbut so far none of them have been able to change the date in their UTME application form. The examination body also confirmed that it had not opened its portal for candidates in the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to effect change of course or correction of data. The Head of Media and Information of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday that many candidates bombarded the Lagos office of the organisation for these purposes. Benjamin said that reports reaching the headquarters of the board indicated that a large crowd of candidates on Wednesday besieged the board...

SENATORS REJECTED MAGU BECAUSE HE’S TOO GOOD FOR THE JOB – SAGAY

The chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) Prof Itse Sagay (SAN) has said members of the Senate rejected acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu because they are uncomfortable with his fight against corruption, The Nation reports. The Senate on Wednesday rejected Magu based on a report from the DSS questioning his integrity. Sagay said President Muhammadu Buhari could still renominate Magu for the position if he chose to. He said, “They know that Magu has been outstanding in the fight against corruption, and that his achievements have simply been extremely praiseworthy. He’s been consistent; he’s committed. He’s a man of high integrity and his productivity has been high. “The only reason they will refuse to confirm him is that they decided to be perverse on this occasion for reasons best known to them. Probably it’s known to everybody. “Maybe it’s because he’s just too good for the job, and a lot of peop...

Two armed men operating on a motorcycle on Wednesday reportedly killed a police officer at a checkpoint and made away with his AK47 rifle in Onitsha, Anambra. The incident occurred barely three weeks after a police inspector was killed at a road block at Ugwunwasike round-about, Ogidi near Onitsha. An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said Wednesday’s incident occurred at about 3.30pm at a check point near Nkpor junction. The source said the hoodlums shot the policeman at close range, collected his rifle and sped-off, adding that the incident made people around and other police officers scamper for safety. Efforts to get further details of the deceased and the mortuary where his body was deposited from the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr Mark Jafaru was not successful. Jafaru said the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nkeiru Nwode was in a better position to comment on the development. UTME Candidates Complain of Poor Network, Other Challenges

Candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Delta on Monday complained of poor network during the examination. The candidates told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba in separate interviews that they also experienced malfunctioning mouse and computers that took too long to boot. Master Chukwuemeka Chijindu said that the issue of poor network might have adverse impact on his result. Miss Adeola Ayeni, however, said that she was lucky that her computer worked well but that some other candidates were not so lucky as they had to shake the computers vigorously before they responded. According to her, all candidates in the hall were given the same time to write the examination and that no extra time was added for those having problems with their computers. Another candidate, Miss Ifeanyi Okpala, corroborated the complaints of other candidates. She said that the time wasted due to poor internet network might have negative effect on candidates’ resul...

London Tower Fire: Death Toll Rises To 79

Police said on Monday that the death toll in the fire that ravaged a London tower block on June 14, has risen to 79. Fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower, a social housing block in west London, in the early hours of June 14 and spread with terrifying speed, tearing through the building with residents trapped inside. Emergency services have been widely praised for their handling of the disaster, the government has been criticized for a slow and inadequate response, with Prime Minister Theresa May facing public anger for failing to meet residents during her first visit to the site. “Sadly today, as of 8 o’clock this morning (3.00 a.m. ET), the number has increased. I believe there are 79 people that are either dead, or missing, and sadly I have to presume are dead,” Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy told reporters. He said five of the dead had been formally identified, and it would be a slow and painstaking task to identify the others because of the intensity of the fi...
