Energy Theft: Customers And Officials Collude To Steal Electricity

Energy theft in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) remains a major hurdle as the government investigates collusion by some staff, customers and meter manufacturers to bypass meters under some areas covered by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company. This was revealed in a communique issued at the 15th Monthly Meeting of the Power Sector Operators presided over by the Minister of Power Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, at the NIPP Injection Substation, Lamingo, Jos at the weekend, The Guardian Nigeria reports. Raging fire destroys over 2000 shops at Masaka Market

The fire reportedly affected shops selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables worth millions of Naira. Over 200 shops and 2,005 stalls, with goods worth millions of Naira, have been burnt to the ground at the popular Masaka Market in Nasarawa State. It was reported that the fire, which struck on Sunday, July 24, started around 1:30am. According to the Chairman, Karu Traders Association, Chief Sunday Danladi, the Inferno affected shops selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables. "Over 200 locked-up shops and 2,005 stalls selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables were completely razed down by the inferno," he said. Danladi appealed to the State government to provide a standby fire engine in the market to forestall such disaster in the future. According to a Facebook page dedicated to Pastor Adeboye’s of the Redeemed Christian church of God news, the Pastor who is currently on an evangelical mission to the Northern states in Nigeria, visited Bauchi State and decided to pay the Emir of Bauchi a courtesy visit at his palace.
