Protest As JAMB Refuses To Open Portal For UTME Candidates To Correct Personal Data

There was a huge protest on Thursday at the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Lagos as thousands of UTME candidate accused the tertiary admission examination body of refusing to open its portal for them to effect changes in their personal data. The protesting candidates accused JAMB of collecting money from them for the exercise bbut so far none of them have been able to change the date in their UTME application form. The examination body also confirmed that it had not opened its portal for candidates in the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to effect change of course or correction of data. The Head of Media and Information of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday that many candidates bombarded the Lagos office of the organisation for these purposes. The chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) Prof Itse Sagay (SAN) has said members of the Senate rejected acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu because they are uncomfortable with his fight against corruption, The Nation reports. Police Officer Shot Dead At Checkpoint

Two armed men operating on a motorcycle on Wednesday reportedly killed a police officer at a checkpoint and made away with his AK47 rifle in Onitsha, Anambra. The incident occurred barely three weeks after a police inspector was killed at a road block at Ugwunwasike round-about, Ogidi near Onitsha. An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said Wednesday’s incident occurred at about 3.30pm at a check point near Nkpor junction. UTME Candidates Complain of Poor Network, Other Challenges

Candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Delta on Monday complained of poor network during the examination. The candidates told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba in separate interviews that they also experienced malfunctioning mouse and computers that took too long to boot. Master Chukwuemeka Chijindu said that the issue of poor network might have adverse impact on his result. Miss Adeola Ayeni, however, said that she was lucky that her computer worked well but that some other candidates were not so lucky as they had to shake the computers vigorously before they responded. According to her, all candidates in the hall were given the same time to write the examination and that no extra time was added for those having problems with their computers. Buhari: State Declares Friday As Public Holiday

Alhaji Isma’il Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer, Office of the state’s Head of Civil Service (HoS), announced this in a statement in Dutse on Thursday. Ibrahim said that the State Executive Council took the decision at its sitting on July 5. He explained that the government declared Friday as a work-free day in order to enable public servants to join other citizens to offer special prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari’s wellbeing. “During this day, it is expected that all public servants and the entire people of the state will pray to Almighty Allah to grant our president quick recovery. “It is also expected that they will also pray to Almighty Allah to grant Jannatul Firdausi to late Danmasanin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule,” he added.

Kwara Fire Service Warns Against False Alarms

Mr Abdulwaheed Yakub, Head of Department of Fire Prevention, Kwara Fire Service, has expressed concern over false fire outbreak alarms being raised by some residents in the state. He said this in an in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin. Yakub, who warned perpetrators to desist, said his men received three false fire outbreak alarms in a day from some unidentified residents of the state. He said the three false fire alarms were received from Tanke, Akerebiata and Sango area, Ilorin, all in the state capital on Wednesday alone. Yakub said that the materials and manpower enough to put out any fire disaster were moved to the areas only to discover that there were no fire outbreaks in any part of the area. Police said on Monday that the death toll in the fire that ravaged a London tower block on June 14, has risen to 79. Fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower, a social housing block in west London, in the early hours of June 14 and spread with terrifying speed, tearing through the building with residents trapped inside.
