Police in Enugu Arrest 2 Over Death of Youth Corps Member at Swimming Pool

Following the death of a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at a hotel swimming pool in Enugu state on Saturday, the Enugu state command of the Nigeria Police Force on Sunday arrested 2 persons as it commenced its investigations.

The death of the youth corps member was said to have occurred at the Hotel De Oranzi Resort at Agungwu Ugwuoba in Oji local government area where some corps members, possibly celebrating the completion of their service year, were said to have gathered for a swimming exercise.

Police spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu said a female corps member whose name was yet to be established, allegedly drowned in the course of the swimming rendezvous.

“She was later rescued and rushed to the General Hospital at Amaku in Awka, Anambra State – since Oji River Local Government Area shares boundary with Awka – for medical attention but was confirmed dead at the hospital,” Amaraizu said.

The police spokesman stated that the body of the deceased youth corps member had been deposited at the morgue while efforts were being made to establish her identity.

He is quoted by The Nation to have added that “the two persons held in connection with the incident are helping the police operatives in their investigation.”
