Hamas Must Disarm, Renounce Violence To Join Government – US

US President Donald Trump’s Special Representative for International Negotiations said that Hamas must disarm, renounce violence, and recognise the State of Israel if it wants to enter a Palestinian government.

Jason Greenblatt’s statement on Thursday comes amid a renewed reconciliation effort between the Gaza-based Hamas militant group and Fatah, which controls the Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank.

“Any Palestinian government must unambiguously and explicitly commit to nonviolence, recognise the State of Israel, accept previous agreements and obligations between the parties, including disarming terrorists and committing to peaceful negotiations.

“If Hamas is to play any role in a Palestinian government, it must accept these basic requirements,” Greenblatt said in a statement.

Hamas, considered a terrorist group by the U.S. and the European Union, has fought three wars with Israel over the past 10 years.

The PA government, which advocates a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, hopes to unite Gaza and the West Bank under one rule
