Nigeria: Abuja Airport Runway Now 57.5% Completed – Minister

The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has disclosed that ‎the reconstruction of the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, has reached 57.5 per cent completion, mid-way into the six weeks earmarked for the project. “Work is going on smoothly as you can see. We have taken you round and everything is in order,” Mr. Sirika said when the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, led a team of journalists on an inspection tour of the project. “The contractor has mobilised fully and we have now gone about 57.5 per cent of the total work, which is good, which shows that we are on course, which shows that we are on time, which shows that we are doing what we are supposed to do to ensure that the runway is opened come 19th of April,” he said. ‎Mr. Sirika said in addition to the opening of the runway at the expiration of the six-week target, an upgraded terminal to ensure passenger comfort, in line with the protocol of the International Civil Aviation Or

NNPC Moves Into Health, Inaugurate HMO, Medical Service Boards

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has raised the stake in its commitment to diversify into the health sector in line with the Corporation’s stand to stay afloat as a commercially viable entity. Raging fire destroys over 2000 shops at Masaka Market

The fire reportedly affected shops selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables worth millions of Naira. Over 200 shops and 2,005 stalls, with goods worth millions of Naira, have been burnt to the ground at the popular Masaka Market in Nasarawa State. It was reported that the fire, which struck on Sunday, July 24, started around 1:30am. According to the Chairman, Karu Traders Association, Chief Sunday Danladi, the Inferno affected shops selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables. "Over 200 locked-up shops and 2,005 stalls selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables were completely razed down by the inferno," he said. Xenophobic Attacks: Nigerians In South Africa Seek Assistance

Some Nigerians affected in the February xenophobic attacks in Limpopo Province of South Africa have called on the Federal Government to assist them. Mr Oluwasegun Oyebanji, the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Union in the province, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone that more than 20 Nigerians affected in the incident in the area were facing hard times. “ The affected victims in the province are suffering. “ A woman whose husband was killed during the attack is now left with four children. The late husband was the bread winner of the family. It has not been easy for her. “ Another Nigerian whose skin was scarred is just recovering from the wounds inflicted on him and he needs urgent help. “ We need assistance from the government,” he said. He said a Nigeria-based priest had visited some victims and had given them cash for their upkeep. Oyebanji also accused some officials of the consulate of neglecting the victims, saying those who visited them after the attack hurriedly left.
